In 1956, one year before I
was born, my father started a home construction company to provide work for
college students so they could pay their college tuition. They wanted to install an in-ground swimming pool
in one of those homes. The
price for a pool, however, was beyond their means. In an effort to
realize their dream, they decided to make their own pre-fabricated panels
and use a vinyl liner as a waterproof membrane.
The response to their idea
was overwhelming. Three years later, they began manufacturing steel
panels, liners, and other pool components. By 1965, his swimming pool
kits were being shipped to independent dealers in 28 states.
